Women of the Word Bible Quilt® Journal: Leah

Rachel's sister, Leah, is another key figure in the story of Jacob's lineage. Despite their complicated relationship, these sisters both became mothers of the tribes of Israel.

Leahl's story on the flower border template

I printed the flower border template on 8.5 x 11 colored card stock to insert into my Women of the Word Bible Quilt Journal. In honor of their sisterhood, I used the same color.

I left space between the columns for additional notes and reflections.

Initially overlooked due to Jacob's favored view of Rachel, Leah bolstered her role and strengthened Jacob's position by providing him with multiple heirs.

I drew a box around each child's name to highlight the birth of Jacob's sons, numbering them in sequence.

On page 2 I continued scripture writing from Genesis 30, noting the additional heirs born and the eventual separation between Jacob and Laban.

I highlighted the verse demonstrating God's faithfulness to Jacob:

"Go back to the land of your fathers and to your relatives, and I will be with you." Genesis 31:3

In addition to writing out the scripture, I included some observations and notes from resources.

Again I used "It's a Boy!" stickers came as an illustration for the births of Leah's six sons.

As I added details to the second page, I also finished out some stitchlines and embellishments on the first page. I'm intentionally leaving some space on both for additional notes later.

Reflections

What impacts you most about Leah's story?

After Rachel passed away in childbirth, Leah was the remaining wife to Jacob and mother figure to their sons. How do you think she influenced them?

Leah pined for Jacob's favor. Do you think this need was ever fully met? It's interesting that she was ultimately honored by Jacob's request to be buried with him and other ancestors.

Whether you're doing a Bible study focused on a character or a book of the Bible, these tabs can provide you with a quick way to categorize your BQ journal.

Attach these directly to your BQ page or use washi tape to add it to a page protector if you're using a 3-ring binder. Another option is to use a Happy planner punch system and build your Women of the Word BQ Journal over time.

You can capture a woman's story by writing the scripture directly or highlighting key phrases. You can follow up with notes from commentaries or your own personal reflections. It's up to you how you'd like to integrate additional information.

I love that this process allows us to personalize our BQ pages. Check out this one Alice shared with us:

If you're ready to launch into a larger project covering many women of the Bible, I've prepared a 52-page Women of the Word Bible Quilt Journal that you can use as a foundation for Bible Quilting these ladies' stories. It includes the set of tabs mentioned previously as well as a sticker page to help launch your illustrations.
