Women of the Word Bible Quilt® Journal: Rachel

Writer: DiannaDianna

Moving on through Genesis, we encounter the interactions between Rachel and her sister, Leah. They had conflict yet they also both became the mothers of the tribes of Israel.

Rachel was a shepherdess who met Jacob at a well, so I used that as my starting point.

I printed the well template on 8.5 x 11 colored card stock to insert into my Women of the Word Bible Quilt Journal.

I summarized the negotiations between Jacob and Laban, Rachel's father. I mentioned Leah, but didn't add much info on her because I intend to do a separate entry on her story.

Rachel, page 2 in progress

In Genesis 30 the theme of infertility arises again... as well as the tendency for a woman to take things into her own hands.

In addition to writing out the scripture, I included some observations and notes from resources.

Some "It's a Boy!" stickers came in handy as an illustration for the births of Joseph and Benjamin. Otherwise, I simply used some strips of washi tape to differentiate between sections.

Reflections

What impacts you about Rachel's story?

What else would you like to learn about her?

Imagine those daily interactions between her and Leah. How would you respond in the midst of these complicated family circumstances?

Whether you're attending a Bible study which is focused on a character or a book of the Bible, these tabs can provide you with a quick way to categorize your journal.

Attach these directly to your BQ page or use washi tape to add it to a page protector if you're using a 3-ring binder. Another option is to use a Happy planner punch system and build your Women of the Word BQ Journal over time.

You can summarize a woman's story on a particular template, such as the well or the praying hands as Alice did:

If you're ready to launch into a larger project covering many women of the Bible, I've prepared a 52-page Women of the Word Bible Quilt Journal that you can use as a foundation for Bible Quilting these ladies' stories. It includes the set of tabs mentioned previously as well as a sticker page to help launch your illustrations.
